practical orientation to qualitative evaluation, with emphasis on

choosing appropriate evaluation methods, analysing the data and

presenting study protocols.

About this course 

The course is prepared by experts familiar with practical evaluation strategies and stakeholder engagement in low-income settings, particularly from South Africa. The course will focus on qualitative evaluation methods, particularly for health systems and services research. It will provide a theoretical and practical orientation to qualitative evaluation, with emphasis on choosing appropriate evaluation methods, analysing the data and presenting study protocols.  The course content will cover the following topics:

1. Evaluation in health systems and services;

2. Overview of the theory of qualitative methods;

3. Choosing your method;

4. Developing your protocol;

5. Ethical issues;

6. Data collection;

7. Data analysis;

8. Preparing your report;

9. Protocol discussions and presentations.

What will you learn

At the end of the course, students will:

  • be able to choose an appropriate qualitative evaluation method for evaluating health systems and services for both their own and their fellow students' research questions
  • know the entire evaluation cycle from research questions to delivering a report
